Let’s be honest: the creative process sometimes feels like utter mayhem. Whether you run a creative business or not – creativity will be part of it in some form. One moment, you could be literally bathing in inspiration, and the next, that damn blank page is staring at you in all its blankness. It’s easy to feel like you’re drowning in a sea of doubt. But here’s the tea: those chaotic moments can lead to some of the most groundbreaking ideas. Seriously!
My creative journey is like a high-stakes game of Twister—one minute, I’m pleased as punch, thinking I’m a creative genius, and the next, I’m staring blankly at my screen like a deer in headlights. But you know what? Those chaotic moments often produce the best kind of magic.
When I let myself get lost in the madness, I often stumble upon wild insights. I’ll dive to and from, search for inspiration in all the places and work out where I’m going next!
I’ll often be mid-project and hit a wall. It happens. Sometimes, it’s all free-flowing, and other times, it’s a scrunched-up face grumbling at the screen about how I’m the worst designer ever (obviously, this is my inner imposter popping out).
So here’s what I try when I hit the wall – I’m not telling y’all to head off and do this because I’m some life-changing guru – just sharing what works in the world of Lark…
I give myself permission to explore without suffocating rules. Let the ideas flow like champagne on New Year’s Eve. Trust me; some of my wildest concepts have come from creative chaos.
When things go sideways, I lean into it. Those unexpected twists can lead to brilliant opportunities. Whether it’s a design that takes a funky turn or an idea that morphs into something completely different, I’m open to the wild journey.
Sometimes, the best thing I can do is step away from the chaos. I try to get out in the wild, explore Devon’s breathtaking coastline, blast my favourite playlist and dance around the room, or get out for a sea swim to get the stagnant energy moving. A little distance can give me fresh eyes and ideas.
Running your own business can become a bit lonely; we’re either at the top or going it alone, and often, the responsibility falls on our shoulders alone. I love to connect and create with fellow creatives and businesswomen. Collaborating can create incredible synergy and spark ideas I never would have dreamed of alone.
The creative process is all about embracing the chaos. Every high, low, twist and turn contributes to the evolution of your ideas and shapes your brand’s essence. So, the next time you find yourself in a chaotic whirlwind, remember: that’s where the real magic happens.
